Steven Jett was been the administrator of the 90 bed Southwest Idaho Juvenile Detention Center from March 1, 1993 until March 4, 2020. He served on the Executive Board of the Idaho Assoc. of County Juvenile Justice Administrators continually from 1992 until 2011, and served two terms as president of the National Juvenile Detention Association from 2008 until 2012. In 1996, he co-chaired the committee which rewrote the Idaho Standards for Secure Juvenile Detention Centers, and later organized and conducted compliance monitoring inspections of the centers throughout the State. In the late ‘90’s, he worked with the Juvenile Training Council to organize Idaho’s Basic Juvenile Detention Officer Academy, where he still teaches several courses including “Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA),” “Ethics,” “Secure Juvenile Detention Standards” and “Overview of Juvenile Justice and the JJDPA.”
He has been involved with PREA since 2005, and submitted many comments regarding the versions of the standards as they were being developed. Steve has been the chair of the National Partnership for Juvenile Services’ PREA Project since approximately 2008. Due to his involvement with the Act, Steve was one of the nine individuals hand-picked to attend the first PREA Auditor training in June 2013 and receive certification from the Department of Justice to be a PREA Juvenile Facility Auditor.
During the month of September, 2013, Steve’s facility was the first in the nation to undergo a PREA Audit under the juvenile standards, conducted by auditor Wendy Leach. On February 14, 2014, Ms. Leach announced that the Southwest Idaho Juvenile Detention Center had achieved 100% compliance with the PREA Standards, making it the first facility of any type in the United States to do so.
Steve has conducted training for many entities throughout the United States. Working for The Moss Group, the PREA Resource Center or by himself through Jett Corrections Consulting LLC, he has performed corrections-related work in some capacity in Idaho, Washington, California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii and Pennsylvania.
He previously served as an ex-officio member of the Interstate Commission for Juveniles and the Idaho Juvenile Training Council. He was appointed a member of the Idaho Board of Juvenile Corrections on February 26, 2016. Upon his retirement as a juvenile detention adminstrator, Steve elected to go to an "inactive" PREA auditor status.
Steve served as a city councilman for Greenleaf, Idaho from 2004 until 2020. He served a 2-year mission for his church in Kobe, Japan. He and his late wife Janalyn (below), have 5 children and 9 grandchildren.
